USS Arizona, Round 2... (Also, the USS Missouri)

We had a really fun spring break. My friend Allison came to visit us (bringing goodies too!), and Jeremy took a couple days off work, so we got to do the tourist thing for a few days again.

The first thing we did was see the USS Arizona Memorial.  We got lucky and when we got there, the USS Lincoln was leaving port, so we got to see the sailors in their dress whites, preparing for departure. They look really small in this picture, but you can see them all lined up around the edges of the top deck.

We had almost three hours before it was our time to go out to the memorial, so we went across to Ford Island to go to the USS Missouri. For the Missouri, we had a really good view of the ship pulling out of the harbor. It's hard to tell unless you look really closely at the pictures, but they are giving what they call "side honors". Every time the ship passes another ship (especially one as important as the USS Arizona or USS Missouri), the sailors all stop what they are doing and salute. I think it's really cool.

This was taken from the upper deck of the Missouri, looking down on the entrance walkway.

The view of Ford Island and the mountains in the background.

The view the other way, into Pearl Harbor.

This was taken from right above those guns, looking straight at the Arizona Memorial.

This is a shot of the upper decks of the Missouri, taken from the dock.

This is the second time we (third time for Jeremy) have been to the Arizona memorial, so I did not get any pictures on the ferry out there. The water was pretty clear that day, so I got some good pictures of the sunken ship.

The black spots in this picture are oil. It still leaks out of the ship.

A lot of the time, Pearl Harbor looks like this.
